L.A. Sheriff May Free 4,000 Inmates Due To Budget

Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca says he may have to release nearly 4,000 inmates early and eliminate deputy positions to cope with cuts to his department's budget.

Baca told The Associated Press on Monday that the Sheriff's Department's $2.5 billion budget will be cut by $71 million in the coming year. He says the only way to save that amount is by closing jails, thus eliminating deputy positions.

He estimates about 400 of the department's 10,000 deputy positions would be cut, as well another 200 or so staff positions.

Final decisions have not been made but Baca says he is looking at closing two jail facilities: the old central jail, which houses about 2,300 inmates; and another facility in the north of the county that houses about 1,500 inmates.
