JP's Los Angeles tour report

Rejuvenate India: Jaiprakash Narayan requests the NRIs of Los Angeles

“India has got very poor health care system. But India has a great privilege”. The speaker’s statement took the audience by surprise. “A minimum investment in health care would create a great impact”. Dr. Jaiprakash Narayan, popular referred as JP in India, has caught the attention of the 250 odd Indian audience who came to listen, discuss and debate with him on how to improve the Indian political scenario.

Dr. JP is the president of Loksatta Party (LSP), a young party of four years, formed with a vision of cleansing and reforming the corrupt political structure in India. A physician by education, elite Indian Administrative officer in the past, a legislative member at present and a major political force to be in the future, Dr. JP is currently on a month long tour to US with a purpose of meeting young and bright NRIs and motivating them to take active participation in cleansing Indian politics. The event is sponsored and organized by People for Loksatta (PFL), a US organization formed with intent of advancing Loksatta party principles and spreading Loksatta message to Indians worldwide. Dr. JP’s schedule includes touring twelve major cities in the length and breadth of US and presiding over 25 meetings, all under the theme of ‘Rejuvenate India’. Mr. Vijay Anand, one of the senior LSP leaders and President of Loksatta Party Tamilnadu, is accompanying JP in this tour. ls1

The Los Angeles event was Dr. JPs fifteenth such meeting on the ‘Rejuvenate India’ tour. For a very young team of organizers of PFL-LA Chapter, this event was a vital opportunity to establish their presence in LA and they seem to have utilized the opportunity very well. The event was organized in the Rogers Middle school in Long Beach on the afternoon of 22^nd May 2010 and it got an overwhelming response from the Indian community. Around 250 Indians from various parts of South California including San Diego participated enthusiastically in the event. ls2

The event kick started with Mr. Vijay Anand providing a brief introduction of a few issues and facts about Indian politics and providing a precursor to Dr. JPs discussion topics. “I must congratulate each one of you NRIs for transforming India’s image in the eyes of westerners from a land of snake charmers to leaders in technology and education and a pride group. “. He then discussed various issues ranging from education to health care to infrastructure to common man problems in India and correlating how each of these issues were interlinked to the corrupt and malicious Indian politics. Dr. JP seemed to be adept in tailoring his points relevant to the NRI audience by discussing anecdotes and facts from the American politics and history. The hour long speech mesmerized the audience which is evident from the rousing applause at the end of his speech. The Question and answer session that followed is certainly an indication of how thought provoking Dr. JPs speech was. The audience asked JP various interesting questions ranging from Caste politics, to voting reforms to Loksatta vision and got deep insightful responses from JP. Dr. JP passionately appealed to the NRIs to actively participate in and add force to Loksatta Party’s ‘Second Freedom Movement’. He opined that NRIs have got quality intellectual capital and that should be put to right use in serving India.

“Dr JP spun his magic. I am inspired to serve India”. One of the members from the audience commented. “I have organized many events in the past in US. Surely this is the first time that I have seen such a large gathering of enthusiastic crowd attending an event voluntarily” commented one of the leading members of the local Telugu association. JP’s passion for serving the nation seemed infectious and has surely left an indelible impression on the minds of the audience. The organizers have reported that as many as 50 people have immediately registered for PFL membership and came forward to play active role in PFL Los Angeles activities. Many others have poured in suggestions and applauses for the way the event has been conducted. The adage – “with great success comes great responsibility” seems to come true for PFL-LA team which is geared up to kick-start a series of activities in Los Angeles area. ls3

The success story of the Dr. JP’s tour in East coast, Chicago and Los Angeles seems to have spread fast to the NRIs in the Bay area. Dr. JP’s campaign in Sunnyvale on 23^rd May, a day after the Los Angeles event, attracted a whopping 1500 odd NRIs. ‘Rejuvenate India’ campaign is surely turning into a major movement.
